INX Media Case :- Full Story of high profile people (Social and Political Issue)

Truth has been told that time is stronger not human being. Yes, what can be said by looking at what is going on in the political corridors these days. There was a time when the present Home Minister Amit Shah was arrested during the former Home Minister P Chidambaram; And today Chidambaram was in Shah's place. Time changed, politics changed. That was what no one imagined. But do you know what is the real case behind Chidambaram's arrest? Who is that woman, after a statement of which Chidambaram went under legal scrutiny? Let us tell you in detail.

It is four years ago. A murder in Mumbai shocked the whole country. The murder was not of a common man, but of a high profile girl whose mother was none other than INX Media CEO Indrani Mukherjee and alleged father Peter Mukherjee. Indrani Mukherjee was accused of killing her own daughter Sheena Bora. The Mumbai police arrested him after investigation. A few days later Peter Mukherjee was also arrested. At first it seemed that the matter is between mutual relations, but later it was revealed that there is money behind it. Along with the murder of the police investigation, the financial angle was also fixed.
Later, the ED and CBI also joined it in view of the complexity and prevalence of the case. During their investigation, it was found that the wires of this case are very far apart. Meanwhile, in the CBI court, Indrani Mukherjee made a statement that surprised everyone. After Indrani Mukherjee's statement, the name of former Home Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram were also added to this case. After a long investigation, a case was registered against these two. After this, the court case continued. P Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram also got bail from the court several times in this case, but finally on Wednesday night there was a new twist in this story.
Indrani Mukherjee in the CBI court had said in her statement that she had accepted Karti's demand for $ 1 million for allegedly defending the violation in the FIPB clearance. After this, Indrani became a confessional witness in the CBI case. The names of Peter Mukherjee and Indrani came up in 2007 in connection with the illegal acquisition of FIPB for money received by INX Media. Although P Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram have been consistently calling Indrani Mukherjee's statement false, the CBI has arrested P Chidambaram based on the current evidence.

INX Media Case In Brief :-

The INX Media case is related to alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to media group INX Media receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 307 crore during the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government.

In January 2008, the Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND) of the finance ministry had flagged a foreign direct investment (FDI) of over Rs 305 crore by three Mauritius-based companies in INX Media Pvt Ltd, then owned by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea. The Income Tax department handed over the case to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which in 2010 registered a case against INX Media for alleged Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) violations.

Link to Chidambaram

The entire case is related to the illegal investment by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to INX Media. In this, INX had secured foreign investment of Rs 305 crore. The scandal in this case reached the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram through Karti Chidambaram and on 15 May 2017, the CBI registered the first FIR due to irregularities in the approval of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board. Subsequently, in 2018, the Enforcement Directorate also filed a case in the money laundering case.

How Karti Chidambaram came into the picture

Around six years later, while investigating a company associated with Karti Chidambaram, ED found documents linked to INX Media. The documents indicated payments were made to Karti’s said company by INX Media at the time the finance ministry granted it FIPB approval. After this, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered an FIR on May 15, 2017, alleging irregularities in the FIPB clearance, and ED lodged a money laundering case in 2018.

What have Indrani Mukerjea, Peter Mukerjea and Karti been charged with?

Indrani Mukerjea and her husband Peter, who co-founded INX Media in 2007, were charged with entering into a criminal conspiracy with Karti Chidambaram, whose father P Chidambaram was the finance minister at the time, to get foreign investments and evade punitive measures for not having the necessary FIPB approvals.

In March, 2018, Indrani Mukerjea told the CBI in a statement that a $1-million deal had been struck between Karti Chidambaram and the Mukerjeas to secure FIPB approval in favour of INX Media.

In July 2019, Irani prayed for pardon in the case in exchange for full and true disclosure, which the Delhi high court agreed to.

Karti Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI in February 2018 in connection with the INX Media case and then released on bail. The Enforcement Directorate has questioned Karti Chidambaram on several occasions in the INX Media case.

P Chidambaram was also questioned by the ED in December 2018 and January 2019.

The ED has attached properties worth Rs 54 crore belonging to Karti Chidambaram in connection with the case. The agency has also attached properties belonging to Indrani and Peter Mukerjea.

On August 20, 2019, P Chidambaram's plea for anticipatory bail in the case was rejected by the Delhi High Court. Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI Wednesday night from his residence in connection with the case.  The following day, he was arrested by the CBI from his residence.
